UX/CX Writing

UX writing is about delving into complexity so users don’t have to

UX writing is all about making the complex simple. It’s a principle James has lived by in his work as a journalist, and it’s served him well.

He has certification in UX Writing, Advanced Research and Content Analytics, and Conversation Design — and he’s learned how to combine task-oriented writing with a compelling Tone of Voice to achieve key business results.

He’s taken his skills to Monash University (among other places), here’s just a small snippet of what he’s been doing.

Navigation analysis

One of the key content design tasks a UX writer can contribute to is making sure the Information Architecture is set up to allow users to complete their tasks.

But it’s not just words, but data which paint the story on how to do this effectively.

App design - Google Design Certificate

As part of UX certification with Google, James delved into the world of visual design in Figma and Adobe XD to create an app for people who want to order from food trucks non-verbally, and a microdonation site for community projects.

Here are case studies including links to hi-fi and low-fi designs:

Conversation design

As it turns out, human-computer relationships mirror human-human relationships. So, doesn’t it make sense to create conversations rather than just content?

Keen to understand the world of Conversation Design more, I created a chatbot.

Component editing

One of the things a UX writer is tasked to do is ‘do the words’ on a low-fi or hi-fi design (although you hope you’re called in before the hi-fi stage).

Here, I was given a series of screens to mark up and provide input on to see how we could improve the user experience for a key audience group.

Tweaking an interstitial screen

As a UX writer, I have teensie-tiny tasks each day to tweak pages for clarity. Here’s an example of that.
